The article reads as follows:

A 22-year-old cyclist struck while riding on Ogilvie Road Tuesday night has died of his injuries.

The man was riding west on Ogilvie near Blair Road when he was struck from behind by a westbound car. Police have said he was not wearing a helmet.

The man died in hospital overnight, police said Friday morning.

No charges will be laid in the crash, Ottawa police Const. Alain Boucher said Friday.

Investigators determined that the cyclist drifted out of the bike lane into the roadway around the time of the collision, and that alcohol was a factor in the collision on the part of the cyclist, he said.

Ottawa police collision investigators are continuing their investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Const. Fay Zouroudis at 613-236-1222, ext 2481, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477 or toll free at 1-800-222-8477.

The death marked a grim week for city cyclists. Five riders who were struck Sunday on March Road are still in hospital, one of them in critical condition. On Thursday, the driver of the van that allegedly hit the riders, Sommit Luangpakham, 45, was released on a $55,000 cash bond and several strict conditions, including not to operate a motor vehicle and to surrender his passport and other travel documents.

On Wednesday morning, a man believed to be in his 20s was struck by a car in Gatineau.

  1. Drunk and helmetless is no way to go through life on a bike. This is one time, maybe the only time, I have little sympathy for the cyclist involved. I say this with trepidation knowing where I am writing, but we all have to take some responsibility when we ride, don’t we? If he was a drunk pedestrian who wandered into traffic and got his brains smashed out, I’d feel exactly the same.

  2. Always wondered about the love affair with alcholic excess on this site. Surely you are not asking for a knee jerk “cyclists rights” here? Drunk and riding at night? Any lights? Hit by a car? No shit? Really?
