I like what these guys have going on. Pedal up, blaze down.
Unlike many slender and pretty mountain roads in Western Virginia, U.S. 221 down Bent Mountain is wide and ugly. It plunges down the mountain with muscular, dramatic switchbacks beneath immense walls of jagged rock. In that way, it’s more like mountain passes through Montana’s Rockies or Washington State’s Cascade range. Almost all the way down there’s an unobstructed northward view into the Roanoke Valley – if you dare to take your eyes off the road.
