Brandon McNulty Wins The 2026 World Championship Road Race

The tangibility for this moment is palpable for so many. I hope he never shaves his mustache and it becomes synonymous with his excellence. He will forever be regarded as panache and chance and everything that makes cycling fable.

Martini texted me a vid of the final meters and the tribulation of his – Brandon’s – assured win. It did not make sense for a moment until it did. That the remaining piece of the peloton was full of nothing but strong men and he put down an attack that left them dealing with their egos, looking at each other. Fated.

Later I was able to review Brandon’s successful attack. This kid grew up racing in Phoenix and I think he is about 20 years my junior, after Beyer’s day; and so his growth was tangible to my own experience and so when I saw what he did today I felt the chicken skin. Beyond being an American, he is Raising Arizona. It takes me back to believing anyone can and always should, try, but few ever truly make it like this. Brandon’s gamesmanship and team weigh a ton. Supreme feels.

  1. Amazing racing by the team – was awesome watching that “kid” win the biggest enchilada of them all. No more words, so I’ll just finish by quoting the (WELL deserving) winner: “… it’s fucking crazy”
