I started towards the central range of mountains that split Baja left to right. The roads lead into the hills and then into the mountains, and to Cataviña, an oasis in the high desert, days away from my last stop there in San Quetín, Nueva Odessea.
In Cataviña I entered the world of the Boojum forest, a one of a kind environment known only to Baja. I would stay there for a few days and do nothing but exist. Soy existo. Cataviña was just down the way if I needed a burrito.
Then, from Steve, the history of “Boojum.”…
The Mexican name is “Cirio” from votive candles as they melt – “Boogum” is from the Lewis Carrol story “The Hunting of the Snark” (Jack London had a ship named the Snark after this same story) and it was given to them by none other then Flagstaff resident, bicycle maker and builder of the Lowell Observatory Godfrey Sykes

Each morning I would rise with instant coffee and walk among the rock and trees until the sound of my footsteps dissipated into the universe and I was left there with nothing but myself.
The mesmerizing environment gave birth to calmness. After the calamity and pace of the northland, I welcomed this new place. I welcomed the silence.
