Randy does what he wants. That makes me, and hopefully many of you, want to know “Where’s Randy?“. At least, that’s the case from here at “DCHQ”. We know the man. We’ve watched him grow up, and we’ve watched as he ascended the ranks of AZ & southwestern cycling with prime natural talent, only to become a complete Hayduke-drop-out because of all the bullshit…

He does the things I will always dream of; like riding the continental divide, or across the nation, or wandering the deserts of the southwest by bike, or, at least breaking into Sausage’s apartment to steal food and other dumb shit like that. Just after I spied this shot of the Randy Ride, the following day, he had completely reworked his setup to the bleeding edge. The following week, on Sunday at about 1pm, Randy, Miss B., Angry Hippy and self headed north from Flagstaff on the AZT. I was fortunate to accompany them to the South rim of the Grand Canyon where Randy and Miss B. were to continue on, (with a brief hike tour through the canyon) north to Utah, and for Randy, the challenge would only begin there.

Leaving for Moab today! I’m ready to hit the off-road. Just got the bike finished this week and finalized my gear. Riding the Ti Voodoo 29er with a Pugsley front fork and tire. Best riding off road touring bike so far! Old Man Mountain came through again with some custom mounts for their racks. Loaded all the gear in to Ortlieb dry bags and panniers. Josh at biketrailershop.com guided me into the Ortlieb Front Roller Plus and the Ortlieb Back Roller Plus.

I’ve always run the classic rollers, but he was right these are much nicer. The fabric is lighter and stretches more, plus they have some nice inside pockets. Weighed the bike today unloaded with racks at 36lbs. Even though I tried to keep it lighter my gear turned out to be about the same weight as the bike!

Anyways here is a link to some pictures of my bike and also my maps for the route through Utah. Following the AZ Trail to the Grand Canyon. Then I’m getting my bike shuttled to the north rim by rim to rim tour company. Staying on the AZ trail to Utah. After that I’ve tried to follow the Hayduke route as close as you can staying on roads, which isn’t that close. I’ll have to use a fair amount of paved roads to connect the route and re-supply, but I think most of my time will be riding dirt. I’ll update from the road if possible, otherwise from Moab.

I’ll miss you flagstaff and friends,
Randy

And on that note, good luck to a good friend on what began as a bitch’n ride and with all prayer, will not find him dead in the middle of hell. Below are my pics from the ride with he and crew to the south rim. Wish him luck… he’ll need it… maybe.
