Every once in a while you stumble across a real gem.
This is one of those gems.
On May 21, 2007, Iranian photographer Jahangir Razmi received the Pulitzer Prize for his 1979 photograph Firing Squad in Iran. It won the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography but in the intervening years, its author was known simply of “anonymous.” The photograph originally ran uncredited in Iran’s oldest newspaper, Ettella’at, and later received international attention running on the front pages of many newspapers including The New York Times and Der Tagesspiegel. Mr. Razmi was the only ever anonymous recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and his identity as the author of the photograph was not known until it was revealed in the Wall Street Journal in 2006.
Before and after he took this famous photo, Razmi covered many events in his native country including the Islamic Revolution, the Iran-Iraq War and the hostage crisis.
