Cyclist Down: Sally Meyerhoff

I received a somber email from Scandinavian Jesus this morning about a local cyclist down. Although she was best known for running, she was a cyclist nonetheless.

Arizona runner Sally Meyerhoff killed in bicycle accident
Professional runner Sally Meyerhoff died Tuesday after her bike collided with a pickup truck in Maricopa, police said.

Meyerhoff apparently biked through the intersection of White and Parker Road and Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway around 1:30 p.m. heading south and collided with a truck heading east, according to Maricopa police spokeswoman LaTricia Woods.

The driver showed no signs of impairment, Woods said.

Meyerhoff, considered one of America’s top 10 marathon runners, was training for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston. She won the women’s section of the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon in January.

  1. …very sad…

…there are no real details so we don’t know who might have been at fault but once again we are reminded that when we hear “…collided with a car/truck…”, a cyclist most likely has paid with their life…

…meyerhoff sounded like a bright, vivacious young woman with a life full of potential, so mores the shame…

  2. J,

Hard to know what your motivations are, so little text to your comment. All I can say is that based on the link provided on this webpage, it says she “biked through the intersection.” It says nothing about running a stop sign. Perhaps you know more about it than I do, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt…but I’ll just mention that the comment comes across as a little callous. We’re mostly on the same team, here, on this site-

Condolences to her family and the AZ community…

  3. From abc15.com: “According to City of Maricopa spokeswoman LaTricia Woods, 27-year-old Sally Meyerhoff was headed southbound on White and Parker Road, failed to yield at a two-way stop sign, and collided with a pickup truck heading eastbound on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.”

  4. …@’j’…please post the link…we seem to be referencing less information…

  5. …@’j’…thanks & there it is in writing…

    …a life lost & so easily avoidable…

    …again, very sad…

  6. No motivation in my posts, very sad events. But please people, traffic signage is there for everyone’s safety.

  7. …@’j’…you’ll get no argument from me on that point…

…i hate to sound harsh because we’re talking about the end of the vibrant life of an intense young woman here but it sounds like she had the opportunity to control her own destiny in this situation & she chose to ignore it…

…bottom line: you can’t ignore basic physics for the sake of a ‘training regimen’

  8. The area South of Tempe has been a bad scene for way too many cyclists. sad :(
