Masters. Now with more Dope.

Am I surprised? Do I care?

OK. Call me naive, but I really didn’t want to hear the news that US Master’s racer Kenny Williams tested positive for DHEA at the Masters Track Nationals this past August. Williams is a former US Criterium and track pursuit champion and had won both the kilometer and 3000-meter pursuit (setting a world record) in the Men’s 40-44 age division at the recent championships.

Argh! Argh! And triple Argh! C’mon, this just sucks. It is one thing for riders to dope when a Tour de France yellow jersey and big bucks are on the line, but this is a Master’s Championship and about all that comes with that is bragging rights to your friends and family which is about a party of five.

It is really saddening that someone would take such drastic measures to win a Master’s National Championship, but the worst part of this whole tragic affair is that this is probably not an isolated incident. Some of my master’s racer friends have long maintained that there is doping to some scale at the master’s level. . .

    Oh, off topic?

Hey, there’s a lot of shit being talked about Kenny here, by a lot of people that don’t even know the guy. I’ve known him for a lot of years, and I think I can say that Kenny has been the man for longer than most of us have been riding bikes. Look, he made a mistake, and was man enough to come out and admit it. I think he’s paying the price now, so bashing is hardly needed to make him feel worse. Just leave it alone.

  6. steevo Says:

Dude he didnt come out and admit anything. He was caught!
In order to start serving a ban, one must write an apology letter or contest the judgment in court. He wrote the “sorry” letter in order to start serving so he can feed his racing addiction sooner.

I dont know him, and was not going to comment, but he DID NOT come out and admit it. It was pointed out to him and he agreed.

He should be banned from coaching.

Nobody needs to know the guy. They only need to know the mistake. Nuth’n but tuff love in this room. Trust me.

  8. Teamfubar Says:

OK, not excusing this guy and he used it to help rehab from an injury, so he had to know it was banned. Shit, if Chapstick was on the list of banned substances, I’d make sure I’d stay away from it, but I don’t really know if DHEA is an “evil” doping drug. It is available over the counter at any drug store/supplement/health food store and isn’t illegal AND it isn’t really a very effective steroidal supplement. Hell, it has a very good chance to turn into an ESTROGEN in men, so if Kenny shows up at the next race with moobs and a meaver (man boobs and a man beaver) you know what it did to him.

  9. bikemike Says:

so, who’s the lucky bastard that gets to check for meavers now?

  10. jay t Says:

i he had a little more class we could refer to him as kenny powers

  11. Big Matt Says:

OK, OK….Geez. I am not an apologist for him. He’s earned what he’s got coming….
He should have taken my cue….only take non-performance enhancing drugs. That way, if you get caught, you can honestly say that you were just trying to take it easy on the competition.
