After posting up the overly-offensive team double cock image, I received yet more hate because of it. Upon the train wreck known as the MBAA sabotage, I received more hater email and as can be seen, plenty of hater comments.
With those efforts, it seemed apparent that I could do no right.
Fact of the matter on porn. Beyond hot & sometimes comical images making for good jokes (as I thought Team double cock was), I just don’t care about fronting it. Although I want to help people in certain ways, helping anyone jerk-off doesn’t make me feel any better about my efforts. I’ve been stewing on that for a while as it has been a part of this site since it’s inception nearly ten years ago.
That said, the porn is dead & gone. Good lookers will surface of course, but cum shots, ass-to-mouth and skull-fucks? Not so much. We all know where to go for that. Some vociferous anonymous mouths will take offense to that of course and perhaps shovel more of their hate into my lap but oh well. I’m not sorry to be disappointing anyone who has expectations of what they should be getting out of this deal. There is of course Douche Blog too.
About moderation:
Good or Bad can be made of all things. I can attest to that. I’ve placed plenty of hater opinion on this here fine blog figuring it out. Now, I’m ready to end it. A Drunk Cyclist should be a happy idiot, not an angry drunk.
When the MBAA issue erupted on my lap I did what I could to make something positive out of it through discussion here. This was of course, primarily to clear my name, but also because the anti-race attitude is relevant here in Flagstaff. I want to learn from mistakes and revise understanding in light of experience… not destroy cycling because of simple conflicts. This seems obvious now. There was a lot of good input about the anti-race issue. I think Garro was spot-on with how it should be managed.
i totally agree with the comments concerning little bear, little elden and the catwalk. not safe for mass racing *IMO*. i feel the fort valley system is *perfect* for racing in flagstaff, however, and can be diversified adequately enough on existing trails to provide many different permutations of race courses while also making racers familiar enough with the immediate area to avoid loosing their way, AND – although we hate to think about it – it is an area where injured riders can be easily evacuated. my dos centavos – Steve Garro, Coconino Cycles.
Even though there was good input, there was a seething underbelly of hate that creeped in as well. I’m not talking about light hacks on my name, or witty degradations of anyone, I’m talking about comments suggesting murdering other’s family members, rape, and attacks against personal friends that were simply unfounded, full of spite and provided no purpose but to sink a ship. I deleted much of it. Commenters like fatbob and SiennaMan come to mind. There every word bent on arrogance, ignorance and destruction. I wonder, is that how you talk to your family as well? I know, I know. It’s just too easy when you’re anonymous. I understand.
If it is me that has brought on that attitude (which I think it is), it no longer has a place here if ever it did. For those of you who have been a regular part of this I appreciate your input. For some, there will be a bit of delay on comments until you are “approved”. That’s just the way it is.
It’s been something to consider though. This place has always been a bastion of free speech. In experienceing just what free speech can mean, I’ve realized that it has its limits. I have cracked on the hate. I’m no longer going to accept it or front it. Life is hard enough. While I’m all for some good “light hearted” hacking, when the hate turns fierce, I’m over it. No mas. I just can’t take that shit anymore.
Before I sign this one off, I want to drop the Giro because it has been an amazing tour. As Mikey said:
Stage 16 was sick- three cat 1s? Menchov looks bulletproof.
It was exactly sick. Lepheimer cracked. Lance worked. Menchov is on the rivet. Sastre had the Game-Play of the day and Di Luca is calculating. Today is the second rest day and it’ll all be over on Sunday. If you have not seen any of it, universalsports.com is the place.
Happy Monday Tuesday.

Gnome-
Moderation happens. I’m glad that I’m not much of a hater, because I’ll bet I have more fun than them. Thank you for the continued effort. Keep the rubber side down.
Mikey
PS: no one can touch Menchov. Lance will not win the Tour. You heard it here first.
May 26th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Lance will not win. He will not finish on the podium. He will not be within 10 minutes of first. He will be crushed.
He was on the front edge of doping for a good long time. Now he is buried in the swell as others take the front line. I hope it hurts.
May 26th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Right on. No need to be getting super stressed over a website. Think we all have some bigger issues.
Yes indeed the Giro keeps getting more interesting.
May 26th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Wow.
If it were me, I might say “screw the whole tamale” and forget about running this site. I comment rarely, cuz it’s lots more entertaining to read. The level of intellect here seems above average- quite fun, indeed. Of course, one can never seem to underestimate the general public……….
Thanks for the courage to keep going. It is truly appreciated.
May 26th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
God is dead. Man is God. Except for Leiphymen of course – he’s proven himself to be a demi-god at best. Porn is dead. Long live Porn. Everything in Moderation. Except ______
May 26th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
not a hater, part-time masterbater, never been a waiter, not overly excited ’bout ralph nader, cookie in the shape of a naked woman? i ate-her, never been to a lake in a crater, one of my bikes has a singulater, just keep the large pics of cocks and tits below the fold so i don’t share them with my coworkers and bosses, thanks and check ya later!
May 26th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
…arhhh, matey, as ‘they’ be sayin’ “don’t give up the ship” gnomer…
…this site has been flying a pirate flag well & true for a long time & that’s something needed in a sea of blandness…
…some of us sword wavers realize when we fuck up & aren’t afraid to stand before the mast while other sword wavers have to be pushed off the plank ‘cuz they just don’t “get” that sometimes you have to admit to defeat…
…swabbin’ the decks to clear the debris is good, mate but get ‘er pointed downwind & hoist the sails…thar be plenty a good wind still ta blow…
May 26th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
hey, what happened to the AZT meeting with the PHX boys?
May 26th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Gnome.
Sorry to see the porn go, but really, if ya can’t find porn on the interwebs, you shouldn’t be allowed to masturbate without adult supervision.
It’s funny how the Flag bike community is so tied to Drunkcyclist.com. You might say in a sense DC.com is a microcosmic petrie dish of all that happens in the world of Flagtards. That said, maybe Flag’s bike scene needs to take a good long look at itself the way DC is doing now…
Or maybe not. I mean, after all, I did jump ship, so who am I to talk?
May 26th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
D2, yea man. porns fun until you actually sort through it like it’s a job. Then it pretty much exposes itself for what it is. I can’t imagine making a living with it. Way too depressing for me. Flag being the oxymoron it is, I’m just going to enjoy it for the good friends and the riding. the monekeys in the back of class I have n tolerance for any longer.
Gordon: I didn’t go. General exhaustion & gear limitations had me admiring beer and not riding but we did have a good time on friday at the MBAA fight night. I’m in no condition to tag-along anyway.
C’est la vie.
May 26th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I have enjoyed this site for a few years now.
Although I like porn, I prefer this site with out it.
Thanks, Gnome for keeping up the good fight.
A little moderation can be a good thing.
May 26th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
hmmm. think Cabin Loop in late June! Multi-Day overnighter on wheels.
May 26th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Good on ya Gnome. Keep it as real as ya can. I was starting to wish for some nice political discussion for a while there to tone things down a bit…
May 26th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Lance goes back to help Levi survive the stage(i know that’s his role), but maybe he’s not the selfish prick you all make him out to be. Give the guy a break.
May 26th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
because he’s Texan, there’s a limit to the break we can give. No offense Tex or Sadcow. Otherwise, I saw him at the front of that tempo group. He looked a bit like the L.A. of old. Then Levi happened. I’m guessing he’s surviving just fine given the role he has volunteered to play.
I give him a break of 2.35.
May 26th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
SFB, no kidding… and people were complaining that we talked too much politics. At least we never got so nasty that we drove the owners to moderate. I’m got going to dave or KG’s employer because I disagree with who they voted for… That’s fucked up. Jeeze people, get some perspective. After seeing the hatefest of late, I’m fine with moderation. File under: This is why we can’t have nice things…
May 26th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
Porn is dead. Long live porn. And high fives all around later. Less hate, more drunky. Good times await.
May 26th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Di Luca is racing the Euro COntinent schedule only because he has figued out the test system there. Dude is full tilt boogy synthetic this Giro I have no doubt.
I like Lance riding into form in the seasons first Grand Tour for Le Tour like the good old days. Hope for a Himault/LeMond battle this Tour with He and cont
BTW Steve Schlanger Todd Gogulski are quite good on the TV brodcast. Straight up race talk/cylist talk.
May 26th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
what does some good old porn have to do with uber mtbr posting type asshole singlespeed riding trail hogging know it alls beating down on the pure?
monitor the ass clows for sure but let the T&A flow
May 26th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Porn has it’s place, but I prefer it not to be on a site I hit with my family in the room. My kids have gotten more than one accidental gynecology lesson thanks to DC. Thanks for the change. Maybe if there’s less vagina there’ll be less PMS’n.
May 26th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
…one thing to be said about drunkcyclist’s porn & that is that i don’t believe my computer has ever picked up a virus from it…
…left to my own devices, i’ve managed to virus that thing so badly it sometimes just coughs n’ sneezes on it’s own…
…just sayin’…
May 26th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
butthead- you’re right, the US commentators are doing quite okay. I’ve been watching every stage now that I have my hi-tek hyuk hyuk DIGITAL TEEVEE motherfuckers.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:29 am
Good move.
I live on the other side of the planet, but visit the site (and it’s links, cycling and otherwise) daily.
I must admit that the recent hate stuff was getting up my nose, I’m glad you’ve decided to bomb them.
It’s a great site (even for those of us who are not Flagtards), so far ahead of cycling in my country.
Keep at it.
May 27th, 2009 at 3:58 am
“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?” – Epicurus And Gnome be the God of Gnomeania. Porn is over rated, hate sucks it. I have only been in the background of this site for a year, but it is one of the first things I look at after email. It is possible to be open minded, and encourage creativity without being foolish about it. Besides, I get tired of seeing my sister sucking two cocks. She is still in trouble with Granma over that one.
May 27th, 2009 at 5:37 am
ahhh, c’mon!! This is the only place I can look at porn with the wife. Damnit.
Really though, good on you for moderation. Here in Nashvegas I started a message board years ago to try and get all the mtb’ers on the same page. Three years later I shut it down simply because of all the hate and attacking that went on. People suck. It’s easy to say things when you no one really knows who you are.
Another dude started one and had the time to moderate, it is still kickin’ ass and doing well. Have no fear, moderation is here.
…now if we can get the gub’ment moderated…
May 27th, 2009 at 5:42 am
I probably shouldn’t admit to this, but I have been checking out this site for a good 5+ years, usually daily. I’ve wasted a lot of time surfing the porn links, so I am probably going to find my work production increase tenfold now that the links are gone. Yeah, it is not a problem finding porn, but it was so convenient (and sinfully tempting) to click the links from a page that I was already on. I can’t say that I won’t miss the occasional Redhead for Dave, but I think the site is better without half of it being porn. Just don’t tell me that you are going to stop searching for Snake Hawk’s daddy – then I might have to delete this site from my favorites…
As for Lance – does anyone think it will possible for an ego his size to be a domestique for two grand tours in a row? I just don’t see how he is going to be able to control himself, especially if he has some good form, which from the looks of it is possible. I will be truly impressed if he works for Contador for all 3 weeks. Maybe Lance will decide to take on the Vuelta for himself.
May 27th, 2009 at 5:47 am
End of an era! Changes must be made from time to time will miss the content at work always good for a laugh. H8tINg is never healthy for the sport between all the users. You all have an amazing trail system in Flag and to loose something like that over word and hurt feelings would be a bigger loss than a blown race.
Keep up the good work words and whit. It always helps to know that the darkness is flowing in and out of the internets.
May 27th, 2009 at 6:50 am
the porn was just ok anyway. far too glam and airbrush IMHO
do I have to email you now for the sex toy site? Where am I going to get the strap ons and dildos now? They were priced well
May 27th, 2009 at 7:08 am
all i have to say on the matter: team double cock was a great joke.
May 27th, 2009 at 10:40 am
Yup holler, stompAriLLAz is porn free since 93′ (didn’t anyone make any bookmarks? gosh not me) The fight against default cynicism has been the basic premise of the STompariLLaz all along. Channel your energy somewhere other than haten’. Yeah I know it’s reeeeally hard to not be an a-hole anonymous commenter, deal with it, do something with yourself, make something, make out with yourself if you have too, jeeez.. nice work Duder. Keep ‘er yellow . m

“moderation”??? Sounds extreme to me!
fatbob has already dissapeared, since being invited to settle this off the internet… I hope none of the REAL DC people were offended by my actions! I made a Bevis and Butthead joke that was in reference to one of his postings, and he came back making all kinds of threats, so I called his bluff. I didn’t say anything about anybody’s mother, sister, or any other family members. I’ve never threatened anyone on this site, or in person, for as long as I can remember. I didn’t take kindly to being threatened over a couple of jokes, and I would happily spar with this dude, if he’d like to make good on the words he has written. “any time, any place” is what he wrote, aimed at bikesgonewild, and myself. I offered the venue, and left the timing open, because I know how busy people are. Sooner the better, as far as I’m concerned. It’s a clean, honest, fair place to box. They have gloves, a ref, and a box of clean, disposable, individually packaged mouthpieces, so your teeth don’t get shattered. I bet if we got a few matches lined up, I could talk them into letting us make it a fundraising event, for something good, like bikesbelong, or maybe your buddy(I don’t recall his name) that’s all fucked up from that car cutting the course recently. Probably none of this will happen, but it would be fun. And a good way to shut up the internet though guy’s!
I was a little bummed when the porn started to fade out, but I understand. Jonny and others have kids now, and it’s better this way. I can find porn on my own, now that DC has shown the way.
I’m not too stoked about the moderation though. I’ve always been able to come here and just say whatever I want to. Been in arguments before, but they never got anywhere near violent. Just good witty digging at each other, which I think is fun and perfectly healthy.
Gnome,
If you the need to edit or not post this, would you please e-mail me with an explanation. I don’t think I have said anything unreasonable, and may be the first time posting here without any cussing. Fuckin wierd!
Are you still going to allow cussing?…. You can just edit that out, right?
May 27th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
I’m speaking for Gnome, of course, but I think what he’s working towards is a warning. We will delete shit now. We never did before. Well, it was rare. I think I deleted an bizarre anti-Jewish comment that got past the spam filter but was completely off topic for the thread and had a bogus email and url with it. I figured it was bullshit and deleted it.
A little moderation can be a good thing. I mean, why just sit here and let people crap all over the floor? There has to be some kind of limit.
Anyway, we backed way off the porn about a year ago. A little bit here and there managed its way back into the fold. But even that got lame after a while. Speaking for myself, I’m pretty much bored with it. It’s not really about having a wife or kids. It’s just boring. I’ve seen so many naked people over the years that I don’t even notice it any more.
Porn is dead. Long live porn.
May 27th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
I remember all kinds of hate being spewed during the Bush years. Just sayin’…
May 27th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Yep, and today is different. Just sayin…
May 27th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Weather forecast: Cold and oppressive.
May 27th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Just like the Bush years…
May 27th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
yeah, DC is a lot like the bush years. cold and oppressive is how I would describe it, but don’t forget get to use “nation-state” that sounds dictatorial as well.
May 27th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
Since the drastic removal of the porn I have had more time to ride my bike around looking for women willing to voluntarily remove their clothes…
Porn is dead. Long live porn.
May 27th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Now I can let the 15/16 year olds that hang around the shop look at this site without worrying what their parents will think of us. Thanks. In these economic times LBS’s need all the help we can get and if porn is a sacrifice that has to be made in order to make it easier to get more youngsters addicted to long days full of dirt and pain, so be it.
May 28th, 2009 at 2:53 am
Porn is dead. Let’s raise a toast to turning off the laptop, going upstairs and doing it with a real person (if I can wake her up).
May 28th, 2009 at 6:58 am
daves not here
May 28th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Don’t miss the porn a’tall, a’tall. Do miss the political commentary though. Guess that sort of thing won’t do these days, being that your boy won the election. Wouldn’t do for someone to point out the emperor is naked.
“Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.” Not so much around here, apparently.
May 28th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
I know how to get this party re-started!
What does the second amendment mean to you?
May 28th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Somewhat agreed, Dave. I just can’t see how some dudes messing with a local race course has led to this. Must be the lawyers. Apparently DC is now part of the establishment…
Bummer.
Peace out.
May 28th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
dave, There’s plenty to talk about, but no one wants to hear your tired old bullshit interjected into every discussion, and I think we have collectively stopped listening to you. You parrot the same talking points every time. If you showed even the slightest amount of ability to think, it might be different. But you don’t. And it’s not. If anyone is killing the political discussion around here, it’s you… good-bye.
May 28th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Can’t anyone/thing be nice around here for a few moments? Ya’ll better shape up or else video surveillance and fingerprinting will be required to post on dcdotcom…
May 28th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
I think I’ve been harassed by an intardwebnet bully. Moderator! MODERATOR!!!!
May 29th, 2009 at 4:59 am
Now Jefe…you go stand in the corner and think about what you’ve said. When you feel like coming back to the discussion, you apologize nicely to Dave for being a meany.
For the record…I’d like to offhandedly say the the Glacial Trail IPA from Central Waters Brewing Company in Scandanavia, WI (population 298) is some damn fine beer.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:44 am
…harassed, dave ???…i know you think you’re joking about this but please, take a moment of time to look at reality…
…el jefe just gave you a precious gift, dave, something you can learn from & expand your consciousness with…so i’d suggest that you should quietly sit down & thoroughly examine the many facets of that gift…
…& the gift, dave ???…that’s right, it’s a gift of “truth”…
…so, i hope you can learn to understand the difference, dave, between your psychological need to be “right” & your sad need to wallow in ignorance…
…well, dave…here at the new loving, nurturing porn free drunkcyclist, we’re here FOR you, not AGAINST you…
May 29th, 2009 at 6:24 am
sfb, Meant what I said. Said what I meant. When someone is combative about EVERYTHING and focuses his interjections on one topic, eventually people stop wanting to play. I’m plenty willing to have discussions with people I disagree with, as you and I have on many an occasion. I’ve learned from them. I am sick of dealing with people who are willfully ignorant and refuse to accept facts, only to rely on their own idea of truthiness and parroting discredited talking points.
Stupid TX blue laws… unless they have a distributor (and accept the silly TABC labeling restrictions), that brew is probably not available here. Breweries can’t even sell bottled beer if they have a restaurant. Pick one: bottle or brew-pub. As for out of state brews, we only recently got Deschutes (Black Butte Porter and Cinder Cone Red are both stellar) and Boulevard (they make a decent IPA and Wheat) in the state. Still no Anderson Valley Brewing Company here…
May 29th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
If you don’t like Alamo beer you ain’t a Texan, I’ll tell you what.
May 29th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
See Hank… er, I mean dave, that’s a little funny. How hard was that? Keep it up.
FWIW, I drink plenty of Lone Star. It’s decent lawnmower beer if Tecate isn’t available.
May 29th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Oh, and I ain’t Texan, I just live here for now (for now being almost 12 years)
May 30th, 2009 at 4:56 am
I feel ya, jefe. Been living in this podunk little shithole 28 years. Payin’ the same mortgage for 28 of ‘em. Daughter graduated from the local highschool last year. This is the only home she has ever known. Locals STILL treat us like outsiders.
Fuck ‘em. Got my family, my bikes, my cats and one damn fine set of neighbors (outsiders like us). And there’s more fune ridin’ than you can shake a stick at. It’ll do.
May 30th, 2009 at 4:57 am
*Sorry, same mortgage for 16. Still ain’t had my second cup.

and, bgw, your intellectual prowess and ability to articulate are off the charts!! speaking for taylor, the two comments are satirical reminders of how dull this site has become in the post-trail-molestation era…
input > output > outcome. the latter is much more difficult to assess.

A couple of responses to a few comments I read over just now:
George W. Hayduke: “I just can’t see how some dudes messing with a local race course has led to this.”
It didn’t. What led to this is Gnome getting tired of it all. I’m too busy, or rather I was during the school year, to write much of anything on the site. Gnome took the reins. He wrote, posted, shared. Opened up. And he’s just about done with it. He gave it a good run. But porn gets old man, trust me. It’s like, hey look at this. And then this. And now I don’t even notice naked people. And my mom saw that post. And I co-worker looked over my shoulder. And then my kid saw that. No one wants to make excuses, and I won’t. It just got old.
As for moderation, we’re now at the point where deleting stupidity is a viable option. We never really deleted things in the past. It did happen, of course, but it was very infrequent. Sometimes people deleted their own posts and comments. Self moderation, if you will. But, by in large (buy’n large?), it was wide open ‘round these parts.
Where will it lead? I’ve no idea. This website has been a part of my life for nine years. I don’t have any idea how it will end. Or, for that matter, what it even “is”. This was a blog before blog was. Now that blog is, this is just old and tired.
Oh, and Dave: “Do miss the political commentary though. Guess that sort of thing won’t do these days, being that your boy won the election. Wouldn’t do for someone to point out the emperor is naked.”
Tell ya what, sport. Write three or four hundred words about that – the emperor is naked – and I’ll post it. Seriously. Stick your neck out a bit, make an argument and let’s do this. I voted for Obama, and I hope he can do a good job with it. But I’m nowhere near that “he’s the new jesus” bullshit.
Aight. Back to lunch…

just sayin… seems like a great site has unnecessarily imploded. err uhh, or just left to fend for itself and starve.
bummer. maybe the gnome just needs a vacation. being your loyal #2 and all, you should send him somewhere nice. i’ve been a loyal visitor and fan of this site since 2001 and just hate to see a good thing meet such an unglorious demise…

“highest form of patriotism” requires a little more game than a laundry list of what you like and don’t like dave all the damn time.

I’ll give you a start daveyboy; tell us why you don’t like interracial porn. Black dicks on white ass for example?

Jonny,I’d be more than glad to write a commentary on the incumbent, in the same evenhanded, impartial and respectful tone this forum showed toward the previous administration. But we both know we’ll see Bigfoot riding a unicorn and jumping over a UFO before you’d print anything like that.
June 2nd, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Dave, I just typed not more than five (5) hours ago that I’d post it. Seriously. Write it. Email it. Big jonny (at) drunkcyclist.com. I’ll be here waiting.
June 2nd, 2009 at 4:53 pm
dave, put up or shut up. You’ve been called out. If you do write a coherent and respectful piece, I’ll read it and I promise to be respectful in my response. I’ll give citations to the parts I have issues with and own up if there’s something I agree with. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m sure a few other of us stinky liberals would make the same agreement. You can’t keep sniping from the sidelines and expect people to take you seriously. If it’s the same old bullshit I’ll ignore it.

…man…it’s been days since we heard from dave after juan grande’s obviously serious proposal that ol’ dave write up his version of a political commentary w/ the guarantee it w/ be “published” here…
…of course, dave did state that he’d “write a commentary on the incumbent, in the same evenhanded, impartial and respectful tone this forum showed toward the previous administration.” which leaves a big door of interpretation open…
…but i’m bettin’ dave is slaving away over his tome as we speak…hey, homer had his iliad…so i’m also bettin’ dave’s piece is gonna weigh a ton…

Stimulus money could pilot Boulder bike-share program

BOULDER, Colo. — Boulder may be on its way to becoming the first city of its size to implement a large-scale public “bike-share” program, thanks to federal stimulus money.
At a special meeting of the City Council on Thursday, City Manager Jane Brautigam said the city found out that it is eligible to receive more than $1 million in federal grants as part of President Barack Obama’s national stimulus plan.
Brautigam said the city plans to apply for the money by June 15 and would use about half of it to fund a bicycle-sharing program.
“If we did it in Boulder,” Brautigam said, “we would be the only city of our small size to start such a program.”
The remaining $500,000 needed to pilot such a program could come from other grants or private partnerships, she said. Details of such a program aren’t yet developed, but the tight deadline to apply for the money means Boulder officials must act quickly to ask for the money.
Boulder has seen several versions of a bike-share program already, but they have been short-lived or small-scale.
In the 1990s, a “green bike” program offered free bikes in the city. Abandoned bicycles were refurbished by high school students, painted green and left unlocked for use by anyone at any time.
Theft and vandalism were serious problems, though, and the program was cancelled.
Boulder East, a Transportation Mobility Organization, now oversees a pool bike program that provides companies with shared bicycles for check-out by employees.
The University of Colorado also offers “Buff Bikes” to students, faculty and staff members. The bikes are rented for free for two days at a time.
Pedal to Properties, a Boulder-based real estate company, also provides 48 town-cruiser bicycles distributed to six hotels for guests to check out and ride around Boulder.
City officials are studying what it would take to begin a bike-share program in 2010. It’s envisioned as offering an automated check-out system, a fee structure that encourages short-term rental use and theft deterrents.
Washington recently unveiled SmartBike DC, the first fully automated self-service bicycle-sharing program in the country. Other potential Boulder programs the stimulus funds could be used for include making additional “green” improvements to city buildings and to help fund the city’s ClimateSmart program.

Flag should do that. And I was thinking… The other thing Flag should do is move the freight train south of town, use the old tracks for two east-west trollies (that carry bikes for commuters) running on opposite schedules, and finance the whole thing through revenue generated from developing the now-industrial land adjacent to the tracks. Trolly corridor becomes mixed use development–parks, housing, restaurants, gardens, bike co-ops–instead of the heinous industrial blight that it now is, thereby making the whole town trolly / bike accessible and bringing Flag one step closer to freedom from the corporate petroleum tyranny that runs the hopeless corporate auction that American democracy has become regardless of and despite who may be president at any particular time.

I rode into downtown Seattle today and visited BikeStation (TM) where a highly goofy pierced/dreadlock type dude said I can lock up my bike free and go drink beer in Pioneer Square.
Not a bad idea.
Then he proceeded to go off on a rant about how clipless pedals were a conspiracy by the bicycle mega-corporations to fleece riders and harm them physiologically compared to dreadlock dudes who ride in sandals and like to “drag their feet in the turns.” Yeah, see ya at the Boat Street Crit, dude.
