I started riding again last week. In the last 18 months I have had a series of injuries that were cause by two dumb-ass bike crashes, one running for the toilet crash, one I don't know how to walk on tile with wet worn-out boots crash, and "runner's knee". In those 18 months I've gained 40 pounds, to a now portly 5'8" 205#. I look like a wool-wrapped stuffed sausage. My big rides consist of 25 flat road miles. I can't even maintain 17mph for more that a couple of miles. Too many Slurpees.

Shake it off, man. I've had my share of DNFs in many variations of racing on wheels and on foot...hell, I've been doing it since I was in 4th grade. Running in college wrung the last bit of competitiveness out of me like an old crusty sponge...my subsequent mountain bike racing career wasn't driven with nearly same spirit. A stress-fractured vertebrae apparently doesn't heal very well, and when things start to go badly for me in a race, I generally just turn the knob waaaay down and just try to enjoy the ride. So I don't race much anymore, because I'm too busy trying to enjoy the ride. And yes, the alcohol would help. Go out and ENJOY...riding a bike is fun.

I'll raise a glass to being fat and out of shape. About died on my ride today while the guy I was riding was rocking a 3 speed 29'er rigid bike rocking the technical singletrack and climbing like a beast.
