Broken Social Scene

I don’t write much about music on these pages. Not often anyway. One group of folks that impresses me again and again is Broken Social Scene.

I won’t bore you with the particulars of when and how they founded the group, the line up changes or their studio work. In short, I don’t care either.

You can sample a bit of their stuff, and read all the backstorycrap over at radio3.cbc.ca.

Tracks recommended by the drunkcyclist include, but are in no way limited to: Shoreline, Fire Eyed Boy & Alive in ’85.

You may like others more. You may like others less. And I’m speaking of both the band and the tracks. No matter. To each his own. And to all a good night.

About big jonny

The man, the legend. The guy who started it all back in the Year of Our Lord Beer, 2000, with a couple of pages worth of idiotic ranting hardcoded on some random porn site that would host anything you uploaded, a book called HTML for Dummies (which was completely appropriate), a bad attitude (which hasn’t much changed), and a Dell desktop running Win95 with 64 mgs of ram and a six gig hard drive. Those were the days. Then he went to law school. Go figure. Flagstaff, Arizona, USA

  1. Fixed pusher- “It’s kinda the flair that brought me into this world, and it’s gonna be the flair that takes me out.”
I’m still laughing my ass off. That is awesome.

  2. This bands does, indeed, kick much ass.

Be sure to check out Kevin Drew’s solo album which came out a few months ago. With all the guest musicians from the band in it, it sounds pretty damn close to BSS. In other words, it’s great.

  3. Pretty cool, reminds me a little of Sonic Youth. They get a good amount of airplay at KEXP, which is a damned fine radio station, stream ’em from iTunes or http://www.kexp.org

Another band outta Toronto that Rawks is Constantines.

    Awoo.

  4. The Kevin Drew Cd is quite good- especially “Backed out on the…” with crazy/killer guitar by J. Mascis. Also check out the band “Stars” (on BSS’s label) for some great poppy/meloncholy stuff- if you like stuff like the Smiths and Belle & Sebastian you’ll love ’em.
